Special Guest Ann Battrell

Interviewing Ann was so much fun that I want you to be a part of it when I speak with her again in 2011. Submit a question in the comment box, then I’ll sort through all the submissions and narrow it down to a few to ask Ann during the “Part 2″ interview. And of course your colleagues and I are very interested in hearing what you think about the subjects Ann addressed in this first interview, so comment away.

Check back in next week for a very merry episode!

Great interview – really shows hygienists all the things that ADHA does for them to help move our profession forward.

  3. Lynn Ramer says:

Such a timely interview! Having Ann share the current environment surrounding dental hygiene in conjunction with the discussions that are taking place within the dental/medical field really sheds light on the potential explosion of growth for the field. Kudos to the Deziree Show for making this a two-part interview! I can’t wait for the next interview.

  4. Victoria, RDH says:

Ann hit the” nail on the head” when she encouraged us to join together to take our profession to greater heights! Thanks to her for reminding us that dental hygienists do have a collective voice and representation through ADHA. Change can be scary…… but together we can create wonderful future opportunities for the dental hygiene profession.

  5. Nicola says:

The interview was very encouraging, for the future of dental hygienists in the states.
I am a student dental hygienist and dental therapist in England and I can say it is the best course ever, there seems to be so many changes occurring around the world for dental hygienists. When I graduate I will move to Norway and work there, so I will be working between England and Norway and although i will be doing the same job, the actual job description is quite different so this will be very interesting, as there are very few dental therapists in Norway and only one other where I will be in Stavanger.

Also now in England, Dental hygienists can open there own practices, so I hope they will be able to in Norway as well.

So it seems the future for Dental hygienists and therapists around the world is very exciting, even with these forums as we are able to learn from hygienists in different parts of the world

  6. I am very excited about the possibility of autonomy and controling our own profession. It would be so nice to work in a Dental Hygiene Practice where we are working for ourselves. I would be happy to help in any way to further and support this possibility.

  7. Susan says:

Way to go Ann.Your fabulous interview gives all Dental Hygienists encouragement to not only join ADHA, but to participate in furthering our profession. It is important that all Hygienists network around the country and find out what other states are doing and bring forth these ideas to change the laws in their states. ADHA has such great resources to accomplish these goals.
    Susan from Maryland

  8. This is a common state of affairs for our profession in Canada as well. We have taken this into our own hands in many provinces. I am living the dream of being the proud owner operator of my dental hygiene practice, and it is a very hard fight! These last three years have been extremely challenging, but more professionally rewarding than any other way I have practiced. I encourage every dental hygienist to open their minds to the possibility of a new model of delivery of our services, integrating our profession with other regulated health care professions, expanding their vision, volunteering and becoming a member of their respective national, state, or provincial associations, and becoming part of the movement that propels our profession forward. Many hygienists tend to ask what their associations are doing for them in these hard times. I propose that we all dig deep, and work together to become united and strong! Dont think Statewide, or even just Nationally-think Internationally! As Ann said, no matter where we choose to practice, we need to work together as a unified profession.

  9. Its really a great post….thanks for sharing it..I was wondering to know about dental assistant school…please suggest me good dental assistant school near Italy…

  10. Nancy Sisty LePeau, RDH, MS, MA says:

Thank you for this excellent interview. You provided so much important information in a short amount of time. Your view of the current and future challenges of the profession was honest and thorough. You explained all of these challenges very clearly, yet provided very concrete ways dental hygienists can meet the challenges individually and collectively. I am delighted that we have such a competent dental hygienist in the position of Executive Director of ADHA.

  11. Diane Brucato-Thomas, RDH, EF, BS, FAADH says:

Thank you for this wonderful interview with Ann Batrell, our ADHA Executive Director Extraordinaire! Her beautifully articulated message is so important for ALL hygienists to hear. I will be encouraging others to tune in and check out this link. Good work, Deziree!

    Diane in Hawaii

  12. Lorri Raydon says:

Great interview. I am glad the ADHA hears the anger and frustration from the dental hygienists who are struggling to find jobs. Too many schools have opened !

  13. kim says:

    Great speaker, Thank You!!!

  14. Daiphin Bober says:

The interview with Ann was very informative. Its very enlightening to think about the opportunities we now have within the field of dental hygiene. With the job situation being “a lack of dental hygiene positions in private practice” here in Northeatern, Pa, this opportunity is very exciting. I am in the process of applying for my PHDHP license so I may work to better serve the underpriveledged population of this state. It was wonderful to hear Ann explain the advanced dental hygiene opportunities that are available. The opportunities are different for each state and it was great that she mentioned this. I look forward to her next interview with Deziree! Great job Ann and Deziree!

  15. Tina Troy-White says:

I think this was a great video because it gave me some incite on RDH inall aspects.

  16. Cynthia A Chillock, RDH, EF, AP says:

This interview with Ann Battrell is exactly what I tell the students in our Dental Hygiene Program. I believe fear will immobilize us as a profession and in the end we are keeping ourselves from achieving autonomy by not speaking up and being active members. I will be showing this in my Community class and in one of the SADHA meetings. Kudos on presenting and articulate “State of the Dental Hygiene Profession”.
